Weekly blog: Starling Murmurations, Night time walks and bright red mushrooms

Jan 29, 2024

January is finally coming to an end and the signs of spring are slowly showing themselves. It's hard to see beauty at this time of year, everything seems so brown and bare, but there is plenty of beauty around if you take the time to look. I'll share with you some of my favourite moments from the week and what we've got coming up in the club.

Enjoy!

I reopened the memberships on Monday and we've already welcomed in some awesome new members! If you're thinking about joining, this is your last chance to do so -  membership doors close tonight.

Wednesday I took myself over to RSPB Ham Wall to see the Starling Murmurations 😍 It's one of my favourite things to do at this time of year. They were a bit far away for a full show but it was spectacular none-the-less. Here's a guide to seeing them.

Thursday evening we had our Full Moon hike on the Mendip hills. The full moon was well hidden behind the clouds and it was pretty foggy out on the hill but we had a really great evening anyway! Our Full moon hike for next month is already sold out but keep an eye out for our March date which I'll be announcing soon.

Saturday I recce'd a lovely route around Bradford on Avon which I will be hosting in March, so keep an eye out for that one too!

And finally, yesterday we had our second Frome to Mells walk and the weather was really on our side for it! It was a beautiful spring-like day and it was such a lovely group! We also found loads Scarlet elf cups, which was amazing to see.

In the spotlight: Isle of Portland (Valentines Day hike)

Come and join us to celebrate Valentines day on this beautiful coastal walk around the circumference of the Isle of Portland. We will begin at the North of the Island where we will walk past Portland Prison (still currently in use!) and join the coastal path through the steep limestone cliffs to the cute beach of Church Ope Cove. In the cove there will be an option to have a quick dip in the sea (weather dependent) before carrying on through the limestone cliffs, past all the climbers to Portland Bill lighthouse on the southern tip of the island. We will then head back up north along the coast path, through Tout Quarry Sculpture Park and back to the Car Park.

Distance: 14km / 8 miles

Time: 6 hours

Elevation: 318m

Grade: Moderate - a few steep hills
